human.interaction.design 2010: Call for presentations

SIGCHI.be is organizing its second conference "human.interaction.design 2010", on Tuesday 23 November 2010 (location tbd). Submission deadline is August 16 2010. Both introductory topics (for the broader public) as well as specialized topics (for HCI professionals) are welcome. The submission format has been deliberately kept minimal and open, in order to allow everyone to submit useful topics. The conference organizers, part of SIGCHI.be, will make a selection in order to offer a balanced and interesting conference program.

Types of submissions:

Tutorials (1,5 h.)
Tutorials should offer participants more insight in a specific topic, be it introductory or specialized. Tutorials can be lecture style as well as hands-on, or a combination of both. At the end of the tutorial, participants should have learned something they can use when they return to work.

Workshops (1,5 h.)
Workshops should allow participants to share their experiences in a specific domain. Participants should be already somewhat familiar with the domain, and the organizers should arrange the workshop in a way that each participant can present their view on the topic, and there is room for discussion. (note: workshops are not the same as hands-on tutorials)

Case studies (20 min.)
Case studies should present examples of how certain UCD techniques, methods or approaches were applied to a specific case. The case study should clearly present the original briefing or problem that had to be addressed, the approach or methods used to address this, as well as the results. Novelty of the methods is not a selection criterion, the focus should rather be on lessons learned.

Industry research (20 min.)
Industry research should present original research in an industry context. Topics can include novel methods, new interaction technologies, innovative interface concepts, results from user studies, etc. Submissions will be reviewed based on originality and how it fits within industry.

Academic research (20 min.)
Academic research should present original research from universities or research centers. Similar to industry research, topics can include novel methods, new interaction technologies, innovative interface concepts, results from user studies, etc. Submissions will be reviewed based on originality and soundness of the scientific research.

Submission guidelines and deadline

Submissions can be sent in any format, but should contain at least the following information:
- Presenter name and affiliation
- Short presenter bio
- Presentation abstract (min. 150 words)

Submissions should be addressed to david.geerts@soc.kuleuven.be.

Deadline for submission: 16th August 2010
Announcement to presenters: 1st October 2010
DETAILED PROGRAM

17:00 Arrivals
17:30 Intro
17:40 "Laddering the User Experience!" - Vero Vanden Abeele

Abstract:
Researching the User Experience has become a key question within the community of Human Computer Interaction, calling for adapted research methods. In this talk, I present both a method and a tool for User Experience Laddering, adapted from laddering in consumer research and based upon Means-end Theory. The UX laddering method and tool helps designers understand how concrete product attributes benefit personal values for end users.

Bio:
Vero Vanden Abeele has a master's degree in design sciences from the Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen. Fascinated by human-machine interaction, she was introduced to interaction design at the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. After gaining professional experience in designing hardware for user interaction, she returned to the academic world, where she focuses on how to create the optimal user experience. Currently, Vero is completing a PhD in motion-based interfaces and player-centered game design.

18:15 "I still love RIA - but where did she go to?" - Steven Verhoest

Abstract:
Two years ago I talked about my love for RIA (Rich Internet Applications). What RIA is, her history and her future. So now we are two years further down the road and thus time for a re-evaluation. Where is RIA? Does she still exist? Does she make a chance and will she live up to her expectations? Let's find out together.

Bio:
Steven Verhoest graduated in 1990 as an industrial designer. He has always been passionate about combining form and technology -- information technology in particular. He was one of the early birds on the web in Belgium. He earned his stripes at The Reference and e-Com, two Belgian internet pioneers. Steven's always made a specialty of ‘complex' web sites, where large bodies of corporate information have to be accessible with just a few clicks. Web applications are another field of particular interest. With his company VERVORM (www.vervorm.be) Steven has launched himself as a freelance UI designer/developer who flies the flag for slogans like "Forms Follows Function" and "Don't Make Me Think".

18:50 "How technology may affect people's perception of their bodies" - Joannes Vandermeulen

Abstract:
In view of probable advances in:
- healthcare through in-body and on-body nano-sensors and nano-actuators, the targeted delivery of medication and highly individualised treatments
- our understanding of biological pathways, individual genetic differences and neuroscience
The following questions may become important:
- How will this continuous information about the body be fed back to the body/brain, if not through the interoceptive senses (the senses that are stimulated from within the body) or through a healthcare professional?
- How will people make sense of all this information, decide on life style and respond to critical situations 'at the cutting edge'?
- How will people change the image they possess of their body? And how will these changes in the bodily mental model cut across different cultures?
- Are models of human affect and emotional response more relevant here than the traditional cognitive models of rationalistic decision making?
This dialogue doesn't deal with Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) but with Human-Self Interaction, mediated through technologies and with the ultimate purpose of making us all more mindful of our own bodies. The body is the final frontier, not space.

Bio:
Joannes studied Archaeology and Oriental Linguistics at K.U.Leuven. He founded Namahn (www.namahn.com) in 1987 as a one-person consultancy and has since built the practice into one of about 20 people. As well as leading his business, Joannes has a busy agenda lecturing at universities and product design schools internationally and frequently speaks at conferences. His passions outside work are evolutionary biology, cognitive science and futurology, not forgetting his wife and three children.

			Fifth International Workshop on
Model Driven Development of Advanced User Interfaces
- Bridging between User Experience and UI Engineering -

http://www.lero.ie/mddaui2010/

In conjunction with CHI 2010
Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Saturday, April 10th or Sunday, 11th, 2010

THEME
========
In the history of software development, the abstraction level on which software is described has been increasing all the time.
The latest trend is to specify software using (platform-independent) models, which are then gradually and (semi-) automatically transformed into executable applications for different platforms and target devices.
The goal of this workshop is to discuss the use of (semi-) formal models in user interface development.
What is the right way of creative design and interaction design working with user interface models? Can models help in coping with innovative interaction techniques?

The workshop will be a platform for discussing the modelling of advanced user interfaces, such as interfaces supporting complex interactions, visualizations, multimedia representations, multimodality, adaptability or customization.
It will contribute to a better integration of knowledge from the Human-Computer Interaction community and the Software Engineering community.
We are striving for development methods which support the model-driven development of user interfaces with great user experience and optimal usability.
Which kinds of models are required to achieve this goal? How can different kinds of models be flexibly combined? How can individual and informal design skills be integrated into the process?
Can (and shall) we integrate the tools designers are accustomed to use nowadays? Is it possible to do user-centred design based on models?

TOPICS OF INTEREST
==================
We seek novel, innovative, and exciting work in areas including but not limited to:

* Tools supporting model-driven development of advanced user interfaces
* Models related to one or more HCI aspects that relate to the user experience of the modeled application
* Project experience on user interface development using a model-driven development approach
* The combination of models and informal design knowledge in a model-driven development process
* A well-reasoned proposal for a (partial) answer to one of the questions in the theme description

WORKSHOP FORMAT
================
The workshop takes one full day during the CHI 2010 conference. The workshop will consist of short presentations by all workshop participants followed by in-depth group discussions on selected topics.
The results of this group work will be presented and discussed in a closing plenary session.

PAPER SUBMISSION
================
Submissions with in-depth discussion of one topic are preferred above submissions with a broader topic. Usage of an illustrative example is encouraged. Both academic position papers and industrial experience papers are solicited.
All submitted papers will be reviewed by members of the program committee. Papers will be evaluated according to their significance, originality, technical content, style, clarity, and relevance to the workshop.
All submission must be in English. Papers must not exceed 4 pages in SIGCHI Conference Proceedings Format and address one or more of the above topics. Templates are available at:

* Microsoft Word document template

Please submit your contributions electronically in PDF format at http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mddaui2010.
At least one author of each accepted paper is expected to attend the workshop. All accepted papers will be published electronically as CEUR proceedings.

Keynote speakers

09:00 - 10:00 Communities of Practice: A conceptual frame for Human-Centred Computing (Volker Wulf, University of Siegen and Fraunhofer FIT, Sankt Augustin)

Computer applications are getting increasingly interwoven in everyday life. To build these applications, we need to take the distinct practices of their (potential) users into account.
I will frame the talk by developing a practise-based perspective on social systems. Based on this perspective, I will suggest a research framework for human centred computing. To clarify this framework, I will present research being conducted currently at the University of Siegen and Fraunhofer FIT.

We are developing innovative applications for distinct domains such as: knowledge work in a German industrial association, a fire-brigade in the city of Paris, and an ethnically mixed neighbourhood in the city of Bonn.
Research in these particular domains is linked by overarching method development such as appropriation infrastructures, end user development, and 3D simulation environments of wearable computers' use.
Finally, I will discuss further research challenges when taking a practise-based view on human centred computing.

17:00 - 18:00 Geekiness is the new cool (Tom Palmaerts, Trendwolves)

In the mid nineties people started to question the concept of ‘youth subculture'. Dividing youngsters in different groups is not done. Youngsters were believed to be very individualistic. They mix and sample their own identity and subculture. Everyone forms his or her own subculture. Today online social network sites proved that this me-oriented view of youngsters needs to be revised. Youngsters are individualistic, but also curious and social. Communities are the new subcultures. Contemporary youngster communities are multilayered in space, place and time. How do they use social network communities? And how is technology effecting real life cultures. The cool kids online are not always the cool kids in real life ... but geekiness is the new cool ... so there is no problem for all of you.

SIGCHI.be is proud to announce its first one-day conference, which will take place on Monday 19 October in De Montil in Affligem, West of Brussels.

We are currently setting up the teams of volunteers that will take part in the organisation of the conference.

We recruited volunteers at the last event in Louvain-La-Neuve and 16 people signed up. We still need a few more and were wondering if you would be interested to join our team of conference enthusiasts. It will not represent more than a few days of work (sometimes less) between now and mid October.

If you are interested, please send a mail to Joannes Vandermeulen (jv@namahn.com) at the latest on Monday 4 May.

2009, and maybe beyond, will be a very though year for the entire economy. Most probably the worst is yet to come. A lot of budgets are being cut, projects being put on hold. On top of that, most professionals, often fearing their own job, are reluctant to innovate or explore new ideas during crisis with the budgets that are left. A missed opportunity, because these are the times where entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation can take your brand a step ahead.

The current climate is the ideal opportunity to question your business and organizational model, to explore new routes, to invest in more talented people that can make a difference, to challenge your clients,...but also understand better the business needs of the latter.

Pieter Goiris, director of the communication agency Boondoggle, will unveil his secrets to tackle the hurdles by taking his own agency as an example: Mixing creativity, data, content, social networking, point of sales and experience into ROI driven services, campaigns, solutions or projects, will become the DNA of the agency of the future.

It will be a very interesting talk, from which we as HCI professionals most certainly can learn a lot: about entrepreneurship, humor, zen, creativity, flexibility, music, dna, involvement, engagement and dreams. And maybe about the brand called ‘Obama' ;-)

After Pieter's talk and a short break, it's demo time again! This time, we are looking for demos on advanced non-traditional user interfaces and next generation user interfaces (touch interfaces, gestural interfaces,...). We will have interesting demos by EDM, Alcatel Lucent and Namahn, but we're still looking for additional demos. So, if you're interested to show us something of your cutting-edge stuff, please send an e-mail to david.geerts@soc.kuleuven.be. Note that your demo doesn't have to be a fully working system: prototypes, online demos, mockups or the like are perfect alternatives!

So, join us at our next SIGCHI.be event, on Tuesday, March 17 at Louvain-la-Neuve!

17:00 - 17:15 Introduction
17:15 - 18:00 "To measure is to know" - Erik Verdeyen

Abstracts

"To measure is to know" - Erik Verdeyen (Information Architects)

Measuring has become more and more important to the job of the information architect.
We need to measure the KPI's of our projects to assure we meet our customers' business objectives.

We need to measure the usage of the site to assure its effectiveness.

We need to measure the users' behaviour on the site so we can optimize the information architecture to meet their needs.

We need to measure business parameters such as sales numbers, conversion rates, ... and compare them to the traffic analysis.

Measuring becomes essential to define what we do but also to define why we do it. We need to justify and document the effect our work has on the overall business. A new generation of tools allows us to integrate data from traffic analysis, CRM, ERP, with our traditional work of defining navigations, taxonomies, content organization, etc. Most usability tests only include a small sample of users. Meanwhile there is data available on all of our visitors' behaviours. We need to exploit this data and use it to define and refine the overall user experience of our online projects.

"Invisible computing" - Stéphane Safin (LUCID-ULg)

The talk will be about main researches in the LUCID-ULg (Lab for User Cognition and Innovative Design). This multidisciplinary HCI lab - gathering competencies from software engineering, building engineering and design, and psychology- is specialised in the development of CAD tools for early stages of (architectural) design. Given the creative nature of the preliminary design activity to be supported, the lab has developed innovative pen-based environments, based on the "invisible computer" paradigm. The speech will present the main prototypes, discuss our user-centred methodologies and raise some issues linked to the invisible computing for a collective discussion.

Bios

Erik Verdeyen has a masters degree in business engineering and a strong background in economics. He has been a full time internet professional for over ten years. He was involved in a wide variety of projects fulfilling a range of roles including webmaster, information architect, strategic consultant, team leader and management consultant. Erik's experience includes anything from the operational to the strategic aspects of projects for medium to international organisations, in government and private sector including customers such as Agfa Gevaert, Sony Europe, SmalS-MvM (portal of the social security in Belgium), Tractebel, VDAB, The prime minister's office, The employment agency of the Federal government and the province of Antwerp. He founded Internet Architects with David De Block in early 2006.

Stéphane Safin is a work psychologist - ergonomist. In the framework of the LUCID-ULg he manages the participative design approaches and the usability testing for the development of modelling softwares and pen-based environments mainly in the domain of architectural design. He also leads researches in design cognition, about the role of external representations in the architectural design creative process, and the mechanisms of design collaboration. These research projects are oriented towards the development of innovative tools to support preliminary design.

the name of the participant(s).

Bill Verplank

Bill Verplank is an interaction designer, human-factors engineer and
visiting scholar at Stanford University. He studied mechanical
engineering and product design at Stanford (1960-1965) and returned
there to teach “visual thinking” with Robert McKim (1971-1974).

His PhD (1965-1977) is from MIT in man-machine systems with Thomas
Sheridan, applying information and control theory to measuring
human-operator work-load in manual control tasks. As a graduate student
he won MIT’s top teaching award, the Goodwin Medal and built kinetic
sculpture at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies.

At Xerox (1978-1986) he participated in testing and refining the
Xerox Star graphical user interface. For seven years, he taught
“Graphical User Interface Design”, “Graphic Invention for User
Interfaces” and “Scenarios for Observation and Invention” as tutorials
at the ACM SIGCHI conference and participated in developing the ACM
SIGCHI Curriculum recommendations.

From 1986-1992, he worked as a design consultant with Bill Moggridge
at IDTwo and IDEO to bring graphical user-interfaces into the product
design world; he started calling it “interaction design” instead of
“user-interface design”.

At Interval Research (1992-2000), he directed research and design
for collaboration, tangibility and music. At Stanford, during that
time, he worked with Terry Winograd to establish a studio course on
Human-Computer Interaction Design which he taught for five years.

Since 2000, he has been a part-time lecturer at CCRMA, the Center
for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, at Stanford, teaching a
course on designing input devices. Also, he lectures in Computer
Science for the HCI Studio course.

The presentation

In his presentation, Bill will explore some important themes about
today’s world of experience design. He’ll look at the systems we
create: Are they tools? An extension of our brain? Or, maybe they are a
vehicle to achieving a greater goal? Or a type of fashion?

Using a series of live sketches (something you have to see to
believe), Bill will explore each of these paradigms, look at how each
paradigm helps us see the products of our work a little differently
and, perhaps, with new insights we hadn’t seen before.

Bill has always been interested in how we use metaphors in our work:
in understanding vocabulary (”kill the program”), in inventing (”cash
cows”), for organizing (”desktop folders”), for presenting (”radio
buttons”). He’s interested in how we can use metaphor as a creative
machine — just attach a crank and churn out a new design.

You’ll hear Bill’s personal view of the history and future of
human-computer interaction. Along the way, you might pick up some
tricks for sketching, which he calls “thinking with a pencil”.
We’ll see you there!

Next sigchi.be event: 23 April '08 @ Skynet

For this event, we’re offering an exciting program with a lot of interactivity. We start off with an experience report from CHI 2008. The CHI conference (http://www.chi2008.org/) is being held from 5 April to 10 April. We know several of our members will be attending the conference, but because not everyone is able to go, we will provide a platform for CHI 2008 attendees to share their experiences with the SIGCHI.be community.

After these reports, a panel will discuss a controversial issue in User-Centered Design: the use of personas to guide the design process. David Geerts (CUO, K.U.Leuven) will give a short presentation on why personas are a very useful tool in UCD, while Karl Gilis (AGConsult) will counter this with a short presentation on why personas are not useful at all. Following these contrasting viewpoints, we will stimulate a discussion among all participants about the advantages and drawbacks of personas.

As always, the event will end with a drink and some food, and plenty of opportunities to network.

The detailed program of the event is as follows:

17:00 - 18:00 CHI 2008 experience reports (10 min. each)
18:00 - 19:00 Panel presentations and discussion about personas
19:00 - 20:00 Networking drink and food

If you are attending CHI 2008, please send us a note if you are willing to present a short experience report (ca. 10 minutes) of the most interesting sessions, something that really struck you or just some nice anecdotes.

Let's drink on the new year! (5th event)

This time, it's demo time!
Instead of inviting speakers we thought it would be nice to lower the threshold for a change and do a demo event.
What does this mean? We will have 4 spots available to anyone who wants
to share their experiences on how they and their company embrace HCI in
their organizations. Participants will get a space in the event room
where they can show off their material (posters, slides, applications,
videos ...). The idea is that we get informal presentations/discussions
at the 4 demo booths by presenters and passers-by. The 4 demo booths
will have continuous demonstrations in parallel.

The topic for this event: prototyping tools.
What do you use? visio, powerpoint, flash, fireworks...
How do you use it?
What do you use it for?

If you're interested in showing us how to use your weapon of choice,
send an email to hans.de.mondt@gmail.com and become one of the first
sigchi.be demo presenters. Be quick, only 4 booths available!
Registration ends on 16 january 2008.

If this trial is succesful, more demo events will follow, so if you're up for it, make this an event to remember!

Even if you're not showing a demo, you're of course very welcome to
come and watch the demos, as well as enjoy a new year's drink and some
social networking.

We hope to see you there!

To register, go to our events page

Best regards,
